Identifying Your Engine
All Honda Engines use a standard model naming system.
This ensures that all engines are easy to identify and are in fact a genuine Honda Engine. It also makes it apparent which engine you are needing spare parts for.
Finding The Engine Model
The easiest way to find the model number on a Honda engine is to look for the model number sticker. All Honda engine model numbers start with the letter G such as "GX160" , "GCV200" or "GXV390." This is classed as the base engine model. If the unit is an older model then it would be better to get the engine type code and serial number to ensure the stickers haven't been replaced and you are ordering spares for the correct engine. Best practice for ordering Honda engine spares would be to get all this information for every engine you need to order parts for.
Finding the Engine Serial Number and Engine Type Code
On a Honda Engine, the engine serial number is stamped in to the side of the engine. All of Honda engine serial numbers will have a 4 or 5 letter prefix followed by a 7 digit number.
Usually the engine type code will also be stamped in to the engine close to the engine serial number. Engine type codes are up to 4 characters long, if the code is less than 4 you may see an asterisks used in the final characters place. (i.e QX3*)
