We’ve teamed up with Myerscough College to enter a series of arboricultural students into a climbing competition held to promote safe tree climbing practice across the arborist industry.
Our Bolton branch supplies a range of arboriculture equipment to Myerscough College which is near Bilsborrow on the Fylde, Lancashire, and to show our support, we sponsored the College to enter four student teams into the Arboricultural Association 3ATC Northern College Climbing Competition recently held at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield.
Various arboricultural colleges from across the North entered teams of students who carried out a number of tasks in the extremities of the tree canopy. The climbers were against the clock but were penalised for unsafe, dangerous climbing and rewarded for safe, competent climbing and the tasks they carried out successfully. The students competed at two different levels - one for first year students with less than a year’s practical climbing experience and the other for second year students with less than two years climbing experience.
The event at Yorkshire Sculpture Park was held for students from across the Northern region and a Southern College Climbing Competition was held at Bicton College in Devon. The winning teams were invited to participate in the UK College Climbing Competition held at the National Arboretum Westonburt on 5th June. The National Arboretum is managed by the Forestry Commission and has one of the finest tree collections in the world, with over 15,000 labelled trees from around the world.
Stephen Seddon, Managing Director of Seddons Plant & Engineers Ltd: “We were delighted to support Myerscough College students in the Northern College Climbing Competition. This is a great event which really does aim to try and advance UK climbing practice and safety. As suppliers of specialist equipment for professional arborists, tree surgeons and forestry workers, we firmly support initiatives which help to make jobs safer.
“The Myerscough teams put in a sterling performance and came fourth overall in both the first and second year events and one of the first year students was second overall in terms of individual speed. All the students put in a great effort and it was a performance to be proud of,” he continued.
Myerscough College is regarded by many as the top UK establishment for higher education in arboriculture. More than 10 years ago Myerscough College provided the UK’s first Foundation Degree and the first Honours Degree in Arboriculture. It went on to develop the first online degrees and, most recently, the first Master’s Degree in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry. It continues to set the international standard for higher education in arboriculture and is home of the National Arboricultural Centre, with many graduates going on to make significant contributions to the industry.
